The Garbage Outfit

Al and Anne will always be a remarkable and memorable couple. Individually and collectively, these two people absorbed God's goodness, reflecting grace wherever they went. The love Al had for Anne was evidenced in his common behaviors whenever I saw them. Al was our St. Joseph. He possessed gentleman qualities of patience, reverence, respect, and the skill of direct communication delivered with kindness. As part of the Philadelphia Cursillo, Al impressed me as a man full of agency, fully engaged in every activity where he was needed! Three events I reference. The first in the mid 2000's; I asked Anne to be part of a leadership team for cursillo- the pianist for an encounter weekend. This required monthly team meetings. To each meeting Al would drive the 1 hr+ to accompany Anne for the preparation. Always attentive, always eager, and then happy for his wife to participate, Al seemed happy to support his wife. Then as Anne returned to the car (after he waited 2-3 hours), Al greeted her with a smile, supportive questions, and opened the car door. Gotta love that guy! A second event with Cursillo was the National Encounter at Villanova. Our Philly Cursillo hosted over 1200 persons (from all over the world, but primarily US) on the Villanova University Campus. Peg needed help for all the airport transports and campus shuttle rides for those who could not walk the distances. Al signed up! "Whatever you need, Peg," he said. Al said that often! Al must have been exhausted with early morning rides, and afternoon last minute rides. There are many more stories, but let me share just one more. The incident that follows gives title to this page, The Garbage Outfit. As part of the Cursillo National Encounter experience, it is customary to have a fiesta on Saturday evening. Imagine the demonstrative Spanish speaking communities, the 'in love with Jesus' people having a college dorm party with Jesus as the guest. The skits at the fiesta vary from ethnic demonstrations of dance, song or dress to guitar solos, and acting skits. As the hosts, our community planned to lip sync and act out Sister Act! We sang 'I Will Follow Him.' There is nothing formal about this event. Imagine the auditorium filled! 1200 persons loud, laughing, singing, talking....then our MC announces the Sisters of the Holy Rollers!. As we process, 2x2 from the back of the auditorium to the stage (20 of us orderly and disciplined sisters), the audience breaks out into an uproarious laughter. We are all dressed as sisters, using blankets, graduation robes, and even black towels and slips on our head. Anything that looked like the imagination could convert the material to a habit. And guess what Al and Anne wore!!! A black garbage bag on the torso, and another on the head. Al stood in the front line as we sang our song. The audience loved our silliness...we loved ourselves. But how wonderful that Al and Anne enjoyed the funny, silly antics of friendship and love. So...ask Anne about that event. I knew Al's time on earth had been lived well: He loved abundantly. You must be so proud of the man who neither threatened the rough, nor chastied the mean, but with his very spirit changed people with his 'little way of kindness.' Al will live on in my heart like a pebble that creates continuous ripples in water. Never knowing when, the why will always be because he loved me and I loved him.
