Mom-away-from-mom

I so wish Lee and I could be with you in person to share in the sorrow of your Moms passing and in the celebration of her life. Believe me, if we could, we would be there with you. The Shannons hold a special place in my heart. I have such a strong memory of hanging out with the new in-laws-to-be down in the basement game room when we came to meet you all in anticipation of Paul's wedding. You folks were so fun, and so welcoming, and so loving; it just felt natural to have you in the family, like a whole new set of cousins. Helen is particularly dear to both Lee and me. I have always been so grateful to Helen for offering to have me come for an internship at Will's Eye during medical school. I can still hear her saying, "You know, my husband was an eye doctor. If you ever want to come down to Philly and see what he did, I'll set it up for you with his colleagues at Will's". And she did. I was turned down for the rotation at Will's until Helen made a couple phone calls and got me a spot, and it was that rotation that set my whole career going. If that wasn't enough, Helen opened her home to Lee and myself and our newborn, colicky baby Amelia for the month. I think it was Helen's calm maternal wisdom that kept Lee sane that month. She acted as a mom-away-from-mom for us. It was then that I really grew to love that little spitfire of an Italian mom. Helen and you all will be in my prayers this week. I love you all.
