Obituary for Joan Harkins (Benson)
Joan Harkins, of Upper Southampton, passed away on Dec. 29, 2018. She was 89. Joan was born in Southampton to Mabel (Crane) and Ralph Benson. She is survived by her sons, William (Lynn Marie), Robert (Donna), Bruce, (Lynn) and Jack (Cindy); grandchildren, Elisa Tull (Clifton), Rebecca Fidler (Chuck), Diana Nydick (Robert), Amy Mahar (Todd), Megan Harkins, Robert Harkins (Danielle), Christine and Sarah Harkins, Patrick Harkins (Jamie Koehler), Andrew, Kelly and Kimberly Harkins; 13 great grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph Benson. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Harkins in 2004.
Joan and her late husband, John, started their business, J.W. Harkins Auto Body, in Southampton in 1951. She answered phones and did book work for the business that is now owned by Bob and Jack Harkins. She loved raising and showing German shorthaired pointers. Later, she went into teaching and making ceramics out of her home. Her other passions included rug hooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Joan's family will receive relatives and friends on Sat. Jan. 5, 2019 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at James J. McGhee Funeral Home, 690 Belmont Ave., Southampton, PA. A Memorial Service will begin at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, the Harkins family has requested donations in Joan's name be made to Alzheimer's Assoc., P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC, 20090-6011 or www.alz.org. Condolences may be sent to Joan's family by visiting www.McGheeFuneralHome.com.
