Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Johnson (Stearne)

Mary Elizabeth Johnson of Upper Southampton passed away peacefully at home Friday, April 21, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was 95. Mary was born July 27, 1921 in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of the late Elizabeth nee Begley and Dr. John Stearne. Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Edward Johnson.

Mary was a devout Catholic and parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church for the past 56 years.
Raising her beloved children and loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren was her life’s work. Mary loved dancing and sitting in the sun especially on the beach at Sea Isle. She loved to sing to her kids and often to those of others. She never complained, except for the day she gave up her driver’s license at the age of 90.
She was independent and insisted on living in her own house and caring for herself until the age of 91 when she was reluctantly persuaded to move in with her daughter Peggy and husband Kevin, to whom Mary and her family are eternally grateful.

Mary is survived by her six loving children: Skip Johnson (Beth), Michele McKenzie, William Johnson (Jeneane), Michael Johnson (Carol), Peggy Maher (Kevin), and Mari-jane Bocchino; 18 wonderful grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mary’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 26th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the James J. McGhee Funeral Home, 690 Belmont Ave. Southampton, PA, and again on Thursday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 611 Knowles Ave. Southampton, PA. Words of Remembrance will begin at 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:05 a.m. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband Ed at St. John Neumann Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, Delaware Valley Chapter, 367 East Street Road, Trevose PA 19053.
