Obituary for Charles Paradis

H. Charles "Chuck" Paradis, of Upper Southampton, passed away peacefully at his home on March 29, 2016 with his family by his side. He was born in Greenville, N.H. to Yvonne and Leon Paradis. Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Dolores (nee Hausmann); loving children, Denise Pliszka (Robert), Jacquelyn Seip (Dave), and Jeanine Paradis-Olenick (Michael); grandchildren, Heather Craft (Dale), Timothy Hartman (Beth), Robert Pliszka, Jr. (Jennifer), Ryan Pliszka, Katie Pliszka, Michel Paradis (Briana Short), Jonathan Bendas (Katie), Joseph Pliszka, Aimee Seip, Douglas Seip, Sierra and Michael Olenick. He is also survived by his son-in-law, John Bendas and sisters, Aline Langille, Pauline Arnhold, and Bernadette Fortin. Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Bendas and his sisters, Geralda Sears, Irene Drouin and Laurette Boisse.

Chuck is a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy. Because his parents refused to allow him to enlist until he earned his high school diploma, he had to wait until he graduated from Milford High School, where he was a star baseball player (pitcher).

Chuck was born and raised in the small town of Greenville, New Hampshire. French was his first language and he learned English in school under the stern tutelage of the Sisters of The Assumption, who were sure he would grow up to be a gangster.

During his service to our country, he met the love of his life, Dolores, at a USO dance in Philadelphia. When the war ended, he began his new life with Dolores in Philadelphia, her hometown.

Chuck attended college with the help of the GI Bill and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He went on to have a successful career in finance and accounting. He was the Treasurer/Comptroller at Earl Gear Machinery in Philadelphia followed by Fine Arts Sterling, Inc. in Jenkintown. During the 1970s, Chuck opted to become self-employed as a tax accountant until his full retirement in 2015.

Among his passions were gardening, Notre Dame football and the Boston Red Sox. In addition to being an aficionado of his favorite teams, he played baseball in several leagues; was in a bowling league; golfed and was part of the neighborhood poker and card clubs. He was a formidable opponent in billiards and infected some of his grandsons with his love of ice hockey, which he played growing up in New Hampshire.

Chuck and his family moved to Southampton in 1962 when he became a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. He was very active in the church, having been a member of The Holy Name Society and having served as an usher for many years.

Chuck was also involved in community activities such as local veterans' organizations, the French Club and, until recently, the Upper Southampton Township Zoning Board.

Chuck was always a devoted husband and wonderful father, who will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Chuck’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sat. Apr. 2, 2016, from 10 am to 12 pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 611 Knowles Ave., Southampton, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 pm. Interment will be held private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the Paradis family has requested donations in Chuck’s name be sent to WWII Memorial, P.O. Box 71. Holbrook, New York 11741.
