Obituary for Leonard E. "Len" Needles

Leonard E. "Len"  Needles
Leonard E. "Len" Needles, a 60-year resident of Churchville, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 surrounded by members of his family . He was 86. Leonard was born in Chestertown, Maryland to Florence (nee Esterly) and Leonard C. Needles. He was a devoted family man and is survived by his loving wife of 61 ½ years, Eleanor "Pat" (nee Finn) Needles. Leonard is also survived by his three sons; Stephen (Maria), Marc (Marita), and Christopher (Maureen) Needles. Loving "Pop-Pop" to Zachary (Ashley), Craig, Matthew, Breanne, Maggie, Kelly and Michael Leonard and great grandfather of Ella Bay Needles. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The first in his family to attend college, Leonard received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1951, and was employed for 35 years as a civilian aerospace research engineer at the Naval Air Development Center (NADC) in Warminster, PA. He holds several patents for designing directional systems and ejector equipment for various Naval aircraft. After retiring from NADC in 1985 Leonard worked for ARCCA, Inc., in Penns Park, PA, as an expert witness in the field of active and passive motor vehicle restraint devices.

A veteran, Leonard proudly served his country for 15 years, including 2 years during the Korean conflict, both in active duty with the Army and as a reservist. He was also a youth baseball coach in the Newtown (PA) Little League, as well as an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. Leonard worked tirelessly at, and was very proud of, his beautiful yard and had an amazing ability to fix just about anything that was broken.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday March 21, 2015 from 10 to 11 AM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 611 Knowles Avenue , Southampton, PA 18966. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM . Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to Alzheimer Association Delaware Valley , 399 Market St., #102, Phila. PA 19106.
